What is Utility Keyholing?
Keyholing is a specialized form of potholing used to excavate a buried utility through a small opening in a paved surface. It is typically used where crews need to expose underground infrastructure while minimizing disturbance to the surrounding pavement.
Because the objective is controlled access through a compact surface opening, keyholing is commonly used in paved areas where pavement disturbance must be kept to a minimum.

Why Keyholing is Used
Keyholing helps crews access buried infrastructure without removing a larger section of pavement than necessary. It is commonly used to:
- minimize pavement removal
- limit disturbance to the surrounding paved surface
- support controlled access to buried utilities
- provide a compact access point above the facility
In utility and construction work, keyholing is used when the job calls for precise underground access through a limited paved opening.
Keyholing with AirSpade
Keyholing requires controlled excavation in confined spaces, often around sensitive buried infrastructure. AirSpade uses compressed air to loosen soil without the contact associated with mechanical digging methods, making it well suited to non-destructive excavation where utility exposure must be precise. Utility AirSpade was developed for this type of work and includes a dead-man trigger, non-sparking components for work around gas and other flammable utilities, and a non-conductive fiberglass barrel assembly for added protection around buried electrical lines.
In a typical keyholing operation, the pavement is first cored to create a compact access opening. A vacuum excavator and Utility AirSpade are then used to remove excavated material to the depth of the facility. That combination supports a clean, controlled excavation within a limited paved opening.
