What is Utility Trenching?

Trenching is the excavation of a narrow, linear opening used to install, maintain, or inspect buried utilities. In utility and construction work, trenching is commonly used for underground conduit, cable, pipe, and other infrastructure that must follow a defined route below grade.

Where buried facilities, sensitive infrastructure, or restricted work areas are involved, trenching often requires a more controlled excavation method.

Why Trenching is Used

Trenching is used when underground infrastructure must be placed, accessed, or maintained along a continuous path. It is commonly used to:

  • install underground utility lines
  • access existing buried infrastructure
  • support planned underground utility work
  • create a defined route for shallow utility excavation

In utility and construction applications, trenching is used when the work requires a continuous excavation rather than a single access point.

Trenching with AirSpade

Trenching near existing buried infrastructure requires controlled, linear excavation so utilities can be exposed carefully along a defined route. AirSpade uses compressed air to loosen soil without the contact associated with mechanical digging methods, making it well suited to non-destructive excavation where buried facilities must be exposed carefully. Utility AirSpade was developed for this type of work and includes a dead-man trigger, non-sparking components for work around gas and other flammable utilities, and a non-conductive fiberglass barrel assembly for added protection around buried electrical lines.

When paired with AirSpade Vac, loosened soil can be removed efficiently from the trench to support a clean, controlled excavation.
